Rowing Clubs
Rowing, whether recreational or racing, has long been a popular
sport amongst the British with long traditions going back as far
as to the competitive rowing races that the professional water
men—those providing ferry services on the River Thames—arranged
during the 1700s. In fact, one such rowing race is still held annually
from London Bridge to Chelsea.
The most famed rowing race in the UK is undoubtedly 'The Boat
Race', an annual rowing race held in the Spring between the rowing
clubs of Oxford University and Cambridge University on the River
Thames, from Putney to Mortlake, where an estimated quarter of
a million spectators watch the race from the river's banks.
